State Highway 2 runs right through the north-eastern Waikato town of Maramarua. It’s an important transport route, connecting towns and cities, and supporting the region’s economy, and North Island businesses.
Auckland System Management (ASM), an alliance between HEB Construction, Fulton Hogan and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have a long term strategy of developing a four-lane highway from Pokeno to Mangatarata within the next 30 years.
Currently working with them to renew culverts beneath the highway are specialists in this field, TDG Environmental.
The work has had its challenges.
Andrew Twentyman, Senior Project Manager, says an aging concrete culvert (50 to 75 years old) at Maramarua, which takes stormwater from two nearby gullies, had a significant bend in it. “We needed a flexible option.”
A 40 metre long, 900mm diameter Branderburger UV liner from BurrowTech was chosen to remediate the culvert and extend its life for between another 70 to 100 years.
“It went exactly as we planned it, Andrew says. “The remediation took just two days on site”.
This was despite having to remove ½ metre deep gravel which had built-up after being washed into the culvert, over time, and working around pipes connecting to a nearby gas station, and a residential water supply.
Andrew says clear communications with all stakeholders and interested parties was critical to the project’s success.
Hayden Powell from the BurrowTech team says the company was pleased to supply the liner that helped TDG Environmental do another great job.
