UV knowledge worth the long trip

18,000km for Better Pipe Knowledge

18,000km one way is a bit of a hike to gain extra expertise and knowledge on trenchless pipe remediation. But Simon Gannley, BurrowTech Technical Manager, reckons it was well worth it.

The guest of leading UV supply company Brandenburger, which focuses on custom-made UV light-curing GFRP pipe liners, Simon travelled from New Zealand to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. His visit was specifically to observe the installation of a 120-metre-long, multi-sized 1300mm / 1500mm diameter, 14-tonne UV liner in the heart of the very busy city.

The site had numerous challenges. The diamond-shaped wastewater pipes travelled underneath not only a fountain, but two train tracks, streets and multiple pedestrian areas.

Simon said the ability of the BB2.5 Flex liner to conform to different shapes was very evident on this job.

“It’s an odd shape and size of pipe. But there were no problems conforming to the dimensional and shape changes, even on such a large-scale liner.”

He said a lot of companies here would have been hesitant about installing a UV liner of that size via a manhole.

“They’d say, ‘You can’t.’ But yes! You definitely can!”

Simon was shadowing Brandenburger’s ‘hired gun’, Manuel Geissler, who travels the world providing expert advice and support on pipe remediation.

Among Simon’s positive takeaways from the visit was how well Australian and New Zealand installers stack up compared to international companies.
