Brandenburger UV liners provide the flexibility needed for a complex wastewater renewal project in Hastings.
Resilience and the ability to flex are qualities Brandenburger UV liners from BurrowTech have in abundance. This was recently demonstrated during a challenging project in Heretaunga Hastings.
A long-term Hastings District Council programme to renew sections of its Inland Wastewater Trunk network is using leading trenchless technology to minimise disruption and avoid the loss of wastewater services.
The first phase of the project, running from 2022 to 2028, involves renewing approximately 1.32km of pipe.
Work began at the wastewater treatment plant in East Clive, around 20 minutes from Hastings, and is progressing back towards the city.
Andrew Twentyman, Senior Project Manager at TDG Environmental, is closely involved in the complex project. He says one of the technical challenges was working with a DN900 lateral pipe running perpendicular to the primary pipeline.
While not unheard of, it was far from straightforward.
This section of the project required UV liners for 40 metres of DN900 pipe, 300 metres of DN825 pipe and five metres of flexible UV liner where the two pipes crossed.
The tender required the successful management of bends, dips and changes in pipe size.
“We said we’d find a way to do it, and BurrowTech came through.”
Andrew says progress so far has been “pretty good”.
BurrowTech joined the project in its second year and provided clarity around pricing, along with a quality product that delivers a long-lasting, wrinkle-free finish without reducing pipe capacity.
“We’ve had no issues with the Brandenburger UV liners. We’ve found them easy to handle, and I’ve had good feedback from the team working with them.”
Fun fact
Depending on where a domestic connection enters the system, the Hastings District Council website estimates that wastewater takes three to five hours to reach the treatment plant from the urban area.
