Bypass plug’s interceptor use takes a weight off contractor’s mind
A large (2.2 km) upgrade to the Upper Riccarton Interceptor in Ilam, Christchurch, started in 2024 and is expected to finish mid-2026. The upgrade will improve wastewater infrastructure along Clyde, Creyke and Maidstone roads. It will also address increasing demand in this busy, fast-growing area which includes the University of Canterbury.
Minimising disruption in this high-traffic area is important but Andy McClung, Drainage Manager for contractor Dormer Construction, says communication with residents and stakeholder is also vital in ensuring everything goes smoothly. (Which it is.)
Part of that is avoiding over-pumps by using a large by-pass plug (300mm to 600mm) from BurrowTech. This safely transfers waste in the areas being worked on. Andy said it saves sleepless nights worrying about pump failures with conventional over-pump approaches, and inconvenience to residents. “It’s awesome! Absolutely magic!.”
Andy says the bypass plug also saves on running costs of a pump. “It’s really reliable. It’s been a lifesaver on this job. It’s keeping things clean and easy.”
Hayden Powell says bypass plugs have a valuable role to play when an effluent flow can’t be stopped, especially in high volume situations. It also helps keep workers down manholes safe, and the areas hygienic.
