Trenchless versus open construction: We’ve weighed the savings up.
Trenchless technologies are more than proving their worth, compared with traditional open construction.
First off, time is money.
With trenchless solutions, time on jobs is massively reduced. There are fewer hours on traffic and pedestrian management, less risk, and road and pavement reinstatement is all but eliminated.
You don’t get the disruption and the grief from the retailers and residents because of traffic diversions and road closures.
(And did we mention, trenchless is less expensive?)
Trenchless also produces significantly less emissions than open construction. That’s mostly because less energy is used, and it’s completed faster.
Getting rid of the need for road reinstatement work means you don’t have soil excavation, there’s minimal installation technology, and low use of lifting vehicles and machinery.
To give you an idea on the emission savings. Potsdam University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with Berliner Wasserbetriebe (the largest water supply and wastewater disposal company in Germany) worked out that the CO2 savings for pipe lining (trenchless) were 5.2 tonnes of CO2e. That’s around 64% less compared to the open construction method. And the savings from renewing the pipe using trenchless pipe remediation were around 50%.
